Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization is a major milestone. The application is Form N-400, and getting it right matters. Here’s how the process works.
Are you eligible?
Generally you must be a permanent resident (green-card holder) for 5 years (or 3 years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen), be 18+, show continuous residence and good moral character, and pass an English and civics test.
Step 1: File Form N-400
Complete and submit the N-400 with the required documents and fee (a fee waiver may be available — see Form I-912).
Step 2: Biometrics
USCIS schedules a biometrics appointment for fingerprints and a background check.
Step 3: Interview & tests
You attend an interview and take the English and U.S. civics tests.
Step 4: Oath of Allegiance
If approved, you take the Oath of Allegiance and become a citizen.
