A green card (permanent resident card) is valid for 10 years. When it’s expiring — or if it’s lost, stolen, or has errors — you renew or replace it with Form I-90. Here’s how.
When to renew
File about 6 months before your card expires. If your card is already expired, renew as soon as possible. (Conditional 2-year cards use Form I-751 instead — different process.)
Step 1: File Form I-90
Complete and submit Form I-90 with the required fee (a fee waiver may be available with Form I-912).
Step 2: Biometrics
USCIS schedules a biometrics appointment, after which you receive a new card by mail.
